Years ago I had an administrator who banned coffee from the classrooms for food safety reasons. It was a short-lived but painful ban that I laugh about when I think back. I frequently joke with my students that “coffee makes me a better teacher”. The thing is… it’s not really a joke! Here at the top 3 reasons why coffee makes me a better teacher.
1. Coffee makes waking up at 5am manageable. Many non-teachers of the world see this as a time that no one should be awake. Somehow, just the smell of a freshly brewed coffee makes any time in the morning a-okay with me.
2. Coffee boosts my positive energy. In what other job must you be ready with a big smile to say “good morning” to bunches of passing kids? The kids have a 6th sense for positivity. It’s so important just to start the day off right and showing the kids you are truly happy to see them.
3. Coffee just helps me think straight in times of stress and chaos. Even when I think I had everything planned and ready to go on a Friday afternoon, Morning comes and I need to plan for the sudden change in schedule, modify a surprise math test, and rearrange seating for students who are not getting along. Coffee helps me plan it all out and make those decisions fast!
Coffee just gives me teacher superpowers. Thank you, coffee, for all you do!
